What was the HYROX Sprint Challenge?

The HYROX Sprint Challenge was a doubles challenge made up of runs and four HYROX stations. It was a great test to determine every participant’s level of fitness, and will gave them a small taste of what a HYROX race would feel like!

Doubles, For Time:

20 x 25m SHUTTLE RUNS
100m BURPEE BROAD JUMPS
20 x 25m SHUTTLE RUNS
1000m ROW
20 x 25m SHUTTLE RUNS
100m LUNGES
20 x 25m SHUTTLE RUNS
100 WALLBALLS (4KG/6KG)

Team members must perform the shuttle runs together.
Team members take turns to complete the stations (shared reps/distances).

Movements

  • 20 x 25m Shuttle Runs

    • Both team members must perform the shuttle runs together.

    • Athletes start behind the start line and run together towards the end of their lane (25m).

    • At the end of the lane, both team members must touch the floor behind the line (with at least 3 fingers) before running back to the other end.

    • In the event that one team member runs faster than the other, and touches the floor before the other teammate, he/she MUST STOP and wait within 3 meters until the other teammate touches the floor before starting the next shuttle run.

    • A team’s first infringement will result in a formal warning. A second infringement will result in a 15-second penalty. Each subsequent infringement will incur an additional 15-second penalty—no further warnings will be issued.

    Movements
For all the following movements, team members can divide up repetitions, but there can only be one person at a time completing the movements. Team members must both be at the station before starting each movement.

    100m Burpee Broad Jumps

    • This movement starts with the working team member placing their hands on the ground before the start line, with chest and thighs on the ground.

    • The working team member may then jump or step out of the burpee before broad jumping forward over the startline. During all broad jumps, both feet must be parallel for taking off and landing. Staggered foot positions, additional steps or shuffles are not permitted at any time.

    • It’s permitted to use a knee when coming out of the bottom of the burpee position.

    • When jumping or stepping out of any burpee, the feet cannot go beyond the fingertips (overstepping).

    • When starting all subsequent burpees, hands must be placed no more than 30 cm’s forward of their toes. The 30 cm is measured from the base of the palms where their hands meet their wrists. Once the hands are placed on the ground, they cannot be moved forward.

    • The working team member must jump across every start/finish line with both feet fully crossing the line at the end of the section before turning. Each new section must begin from the designated start line position - chest on the ground with hands placed behind the white line.

    • The resting team member must walk behind the working team member at all times and must stay in the designated lane.

    • When transitioning between team members, the resting team member will begin by placing their hands where the working team member’s feet landed, toes and fingers in line.

    • It is each team’s responsibility to make it clear for the judges that they are meeting all movement standards.

    • If a ‘no rep’ is called out by the judges, the working team member must redo the movement at the start location of that single movement.

    • The workout station is completed once the working team member jumps over the final finish line. If either foot lands on or before the finish line, another burpee broad jump must be completed.

    • A team’s first infringement will result in a formal warning. A second infringement will result in a 15-second penalty. Each subsequent infringement will incur an additional 15-second penalty—no further warnings will be issued.

    1000m Row

    • The RowErg’s damper may be set to any setting, and may be adjusted as many times as needed by the working team member only.

    • The working team member’s feet must be on their rowers’ foot plates and their backside on the seat before taking hold of the rower handle. Their feet must remain on the foot plates at all times during their turn.

    • The resting team member must remain in the marked area behind the working team member at all times. They are not permitted to obstruct other teams.

    • It is not permitted for team members to pass each other the rower handle, adjust the damper or adjust the footstraps for each other. The rower handles must be placed back into the holder before switching or ending.

    • After completing 1000m, the working team member must remain seated and raise their arm to request their judge confirm that the required distance has been completed.

    • The working team member may only dismount their rower and leave the workout station after receiving the judge’s confirmation of completion.

    • A team’s first infringement will result in a formal warning. A second infringement will result in a 15-second penalty. Each subsequent infringement will incur an additional 15-second penalty—no further warnings will be issued. A 60-sec penalty will be added if handles are let go abruptly.

    100m Lunges

    • The working team member starts by standing tall with both feet behind the line before beginning their first lunge across the start line.

    • During each lunge, the trailing knee must clearly touch the ground.

    • Each repetition ends with the working team member standing tall, knees and hips fully extended.

    • Lunges must be alternating i.e. alternating knees touching the ground.

    • The working team member can either lunge continuously or stop between each lunge with both feet parallel on the ground.

    • It is not permitted to take any steps or shuffles between repetitions.

    • If a ‘no rep’ is called out by the judges, the working team member must redo the movement at the start location of that single movement.

    • It is required that the working team member’s front foot must completely cross the white line at the end of each lane, and the finish line.

    • The resting team member must walk behind the working team member at all times. It is not permitted to walk beside the working team member.

    • When transitioning between team members, the resting team member will begin by starting from where the working team member ended their last lunge.

    • The station is complete once the working team member’s leading foot completely crosses the finish line.

    • A team’s first infringement will result in a formal warning. A second infringement will result in a 15-second penalty. Each subsequent infringement will incur an additional 15-second penalty—no further warnings will be issued.

    100 Wall Balls

    • The working team member must start by standing tall (hips and knees extended), holding the wall ball with both hands i.e. it is not permitted to pick the wall ball up from the ground and immediately throw it at the target.

    • The working team member then squats below parallel and throws the ball (with both hands) as they stand up, striking the correct target on the wall ball rig—this is counted as one repetition.

    • Each wall ball throw must strike the designated lines, or higher. Male teams are to aim for the top line (3m), while female teams are to aim for the bottom line (2.7m).

    • After the ball touches the target, the working team member either catches the ball and initiates the movement again or alternately, allows the wall ball to hit the ground before starting the movement again i.e. standing tall, hips and knees extended before commencing the squat. It is not permitted to catch the ball after it bounces and continue with the next repetition.

    • At the bottom position of the squat, the racer’s hips (hip crease) must descend lower than their knees (also known as below parallel or below 90°).

    • The resting team member must remain in the marked area while waiting.

    • The transition of the wall ball between team members is by either allowing the ball to go to the floor or by handing it between themselves. A flying transition where the working team member throws the ball to the target and the other team member catches it in the squat and keeps moving is not permitted. Doing so will result in a no-rep.

    • The station is complete once their judge confirms that 100 valid Wall Ball repetitions have been completed.

    Finisher Stage

    • Teams that successfully complete the Wall Ball station will have to run to the Finisher Stage to complete the challenge.

    • Official race timing will be confirmed once both team members cross the finish line on the Finisher Stage.

    Scaled Movements

    • If at least one team member is not able to perform any of the movements in correct form (e.g. due to mobility issues, etc.), they can opt to do the race with ‘Scaled' movements.

    • These teams will be allowed to perform the movements to the best of their abilities, and complete the race.

    • However, teams using scaled movements will not be able to compete for any podium prizes. They will be ranked below teams that complete the race doing the movements as prescribed.
